APN and ACP to raise awareness of neuromuscular diseases

08 maio 2025

The Portuguese Neuromuscular Association (APN), with the support of the Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP), will be present at the 58th edition of the Vodafone Rally de Portugal, taking place from May 15 to 18 at EXPONOR, in Porto.

The goal? To raise awareness about neuromuscular diseases and shed light on the daily realities of those living with these conditions.

Throughout the four-day event, APN will host an interactive experience at their booth inside the venue, inviting everyone to step into the shoes of someone living with a neuromuscular disease.

Visitors will be able to try out a specially adapted vehicle and two electric wheelchairs. The aim is to offer a 10-minute immersive experience in navigating the world using mobility aids — a powerful and direct way to foster empathy and understanding of the daily challenges faced by people with motor limitations.

Ana Gonçalves, Vice President of APN, explains:

"Most people with neuromuscular diseases rely on electric wheelchairs to move around and need constant support. We want visitors to understand these difficulties and become more prepared to build a more inclusive and compassionate society."

Vodafone Rally de Portugal: Mobility for all

From the ACP’s perspective, this initiative is a strong example of social responsibility embedded in a major sporting event.

Mafalda Moraes, the ACP’s Social Responsibility Coordinator, says:

"Taking part in this initiative reinforces our commitment to mobility for all. We want to use the visibility of the Rally to support this cause and raise awareness among the public."

Why does it matter?

Neuromuscular diseases are the largest group of rare diseases in Portugal and affect thousands of people. Despite this, they are still under-recognized and misunderstood.

There are over 200 different conditions — including myopathies, neuropathies, muscular dystrophies, and ataxias — many of which also affect respiratory and cardiac muscles, leading to severe complications.

These diseases have no cure and progressively impair autonomy and mobility.

That’s why APN’s presence at Rally de Portugal is such a valuable opportunity to boost public awareness and encourage a more inclusive and attentive society.
