The return of Araujo – kind of…

17 maio 2017

However, the popular driver from Santo Tirso who last competed in the FIA World Rally Championship in Finland in 2012, will not be contesting the event but will be performing a vital safety role, driving the Zero car ahead of the competitors.

Driving a Group N Subaru Impreza, he says his role will be to inspect the conditions for the crews. “I will not be looking at safety for the spectators, for example,” Araujo said. “That is the role of the 000 and 00 cars. My job is to check that everything is ready for the competing cars, as they will come through the stage after me.”

Araujo was invited to undertake this crucial role by the Automovil Club de Portugal and both he and the ACP are keen to remind spectators that this is not the return to competition they might hope for. “I am very focussed on my role, which is entirely about safety,” he said. “However, the buzz around me being involved again is amazing!”

Joining him in the car at his own invitation will be fellow driver, Pedro Leal but this weekend car, acting as co-driver. Leal is a hugely experienced driver in his own right and Araujo invited him to join him because of his extensive knowledge of the conditions, regulations and pace notes. “For a role like this, you really need a good team.”
